Whether you love it or hate it, New York City is one of those places that represents the USA. The Statue of Liberty, The Empire State Building, the site of the 9/11 attacks…all those things are part of the American experience. You know where they are and what they look like even if you've never set foot in the Big Apple.
Now, a mayoral election could change everything. Democratic Socialist Zohran Mamdani, born in Uganda, has not only won the mayor's seat but also thoroughly defeated his adversaries.
He campaigned on making New York City an affordable utopia, with reasonably priced housing, government-run grocery stores, universal childcare, and a safe haven for illegal immigrants. I imagine that in the past, others have instituted communism with very similar promises.
