President Trump said on Monday that he is in serious discussions and close to a deal with Iran, while threatening to escalate "if for any reason a deal is not shortly reached."
Trump has given Iran until Monday, April 6, to stop blocking oil shipping in the Strait of Hormuz amid negotiations.
On Sunday night, Trump told reporters on Air Force One that a deal with Iran "could be soon," adding that the US is "weeks ahead of schedule."
On the potential deployment of ground troops, Trump said, "I just have lots of alternatives," also noting, "we have tremendous numbers of ships over there."
