The biggest electric plane ever is about to hit the skies.
Heart Aerospace's X1, the full-scale demonstrator for the ES-30 production aircraft, has been cleared for test flights by the Federal Aviation Administration.
The FAA issued a Special Airworthiness Certificate in the Experimental Category (SAC-EC) following an inspection of the demonstrator at Plattsburgh International Airport in upstate New York, giving Heart the green light to begin test flights immediately. The California-based plane maker worked with the administration for over a year and developed an extensive ground-testing program that proved the experimental aircraft was ready for takeoff.
"Earning FAA flight authorization brings the X1 program to the threshold of first flight," Heart founder and CEO Anders Forslund said in a statement. "This achievement reflects the rigor of the work completed by Heart's engineering and flight-test teams, as well as the close working relationship we have built with the FAA."
With a wingspan of 106 feet, a fuselage length of 76 feet, and a takeoff weight of more than 25,000 pounds, the X1 is set to become the largest electric aircraft ever flown. (That title previously belonged to a modified Cessna Caravan 208B, which flew over Washington State in 2020.) It will serve as a flying testbed for new green tech, allowing Heart to further develop and refine the production model.
The ES-30 is a hybrid-electric plane designed to carry up to 30 passengers on short-haul regional flights. It is equipped with two inboard electric motors and two outboard turboprop engines, meaning it can run on pure battery power, sustainable aviation fuel, or a mix of both. That not only lowers operating costs but also reduces carbon emissions.
The ES-30 has an all-electric range of 124 miles and an extended hybrid range up to 497 miles. It can also be fully recharged in about 30 minutes and land on short runways measuring 3,600 feet. Certification and service entry are planned for 2031, with the X1 program paving the way for the full-scale rollout of the ES-30.
"With our certificate now in hand, our full focus is on flight," adds Forslund. "We are ready to get X1 in the air."
