More than 300 tourists, including 33 Britons and 47 Americans, are missing after devastating flash floods and mudslides wiped out buildings and bridges along the Nepal-Tibet border.

Experts believe the catastrophe was triggered by an earthquake causing a colossal glacier to snap, sending a 2,000ft chunk smashing into the valley below 'like a bomb'.

This morning, houses and roads were swept away in Nepal by rushing water that had built up following a blockage of the nearby Lhende river which suddenly released without warning. 

The pent-up water carved up nearly 30 miles of land from China-controlled Tibet down into the Nepali town of Trishuli, leaving a path of near total destruction in its wake. 

Chinese officials said they feared 'major casualties' after a mudslide hit a land crossing between the neighbours this morning. 

At least 95 people have been confirmed dead in Nepal following the natural disaster, amid fears that more bodies will be found as search and rescue operations get underway. Meanwhile, China reported that three people have been killed in Gyirong, with an additional 265 people still missing. 

Alongside the missing Britons and Americans, 34 Australians and 24 Canadians have not been accounted for. 

Terrifying footage shows a tsunami wave of flood water crashing through a town, sweeping away everything in its path in the mountainous Rasuwa region of Nepal. 

In Tibet, one clip showed the Gyirong Port land crossing being annihilated by the flood. Dozens of people were seen running away in terror seconds before the water and mud crashed into the structure and wiped it out. 

Scientists believe a 4.4-magnitude quake triggered an ice avalanche which in turn blocked the Lhende river. Water then built up behind the blockage before bursting downstream with devastating consequences.

Dr Daniel Shugar, an earth scientists and professor at the University of Calgary, said that a 2,000ft-wide chunk of ice appeared to have broken clean off and fallen more than a kilometre to the valley floor.

'The bottom looks like a bomb exploded - it's just deposits from the broken-up glacier,' he told the New York Times.
