The United Kingdom has agreed to provide limited military support to Saudi Arabia as the kingdom faces intensified attacks by Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen, British Prime Minister Andy Burnham said on Monday.
The assistance, as per the BBC, will include defensive air-to-air refuelling for Saudi aircraft and is expected to begin in the coming days. Burnham said the arrangement would last for a limited period, potentially several weeks, and remain under review by British authorities.
The announcement came as Burnham was on his way to New York to attend the 81st United Nations General Assembly. Speaking to reporters aboard his plane, he said the decision followed a request from Saudi Arabia and advice from the British defence and foreign secretaries.
'We have received a request from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for military support, and on the advice of the defence secretary and the foreign secretary, last night I agreed to that request for defensive air-to-air refuelling,' Burnham said.
