A commercial that aired during Super Bowl LX left viewers unnerved after unveiling a sophisticated Ring doorbell camera surveillance system claiming it would help people find lost pets.
The 30-second ad featured a young girl gifted a puppy by her father, and in the next scene posting "lost dog" flyers on utility poles, before being reunited with her lost pup with the help of Ring's new "Search Party" feature.
"Pets are family. But every year, 10 million go missing. And the way we look for them hasn't changed in years," the ad stated, adding, "until now."
"One post of a dog's photo in the ring app starts outdoor cameras looking for a match," the commercial stated, showing a neighborhood surveillance grid comprised of neighbors' Ring camera feeds.
"Search Party from Ring uses AI to help families find lost dogs," the ad said. "Since launch, more than a dog a day has been reunited with their family."
The company's website states: "Search Party helps find lost dogs in your neighborhood. When a neighbor reports a missing dog in the Ring app, your outdoor Ring cameras use AI to look for matches in your recordings. If your camera spots what might be the lost dog, you'll get an alert with: A picture of the missing dog, Video footage from your camera."
The advertisement left viewers uneasy, with many worried the surveillance state is openly encroaching on their daily lives.
"This Ring Camera Commercial from #SuperBowl is Scary Af RIP Privacy," one X user wrote.
"This @ring camera commercial played at #SuperBowl is something out of a dystopian thriller. Who would ever install these cameras after this? CREEPY AF!" wrote another.
