Mike Rowe, the Dirty Jobs legend who actually respects hard work, dirty hands, and the American free-market system that built this country, decided to say the quiet part out loud. The Democratic Socialists of America aren't some mild Nordic-flavored social democrats. Large chunks of them are open about wanting to tear down capitalism, borders, police, prisons, property rights, and the Constitution itself. And the Democratic Party, led by people like Gavin Newsom, is rolling out the welcome mat.
Rowe's original post laid it out without the usual media soft-pedaling. He noted that DSA-aligned candidates and officials aren't subtle. They talk about "no borders, no police, no prisons, no Senate." They quote Karl Marx's "from each according to his ability, to each according to his needs." New York City officials and candidates have openly floated electing more communists. Newsom responded to the rise of these candidates by saying the Democratic Party needs to be in the "addition, not subtraction" business and would campaign for them to retake Congress. Rowe's reaction was simple and devastating: this is the largest political blunder in living memory, and it puts Ronald Reagan's warning that "freedom is never more than one generation from extinction" front and center.
The left predictably lost its mind. Suddenly the man who spent years celebrating the trades and work ethic was "spouting communism like it's the 1950s," engaging in "McCarthyism 2.0," and going "full-on MAGA." Critics scrambled to insist there's a sacred distinction between "democratic socialism" and communism, as if the name of the club magically changes the content of the ideology when the members themselves are quoting the Communist Manifesto and calling for the dismantling of the system that made America the freest and most prosperous nation in history.
Rowe's response was pure gold – calm, precise, and lethal. He pointed out that he wasn't the one inventing the communist label. DSA members and their allies were using it themselves. He highlighted specific examples: Cea Weaver (tied to the NYC mayor's office) calling to "elect more communists," and candidates literally recycling Marx. He reminded the pearl-clutchers that actual self-described communists can now run for office with the endorsement of California's governor and the tacit approval of a major party. That's the opposite of a Red Scare. That's an open invitation.
This is the heart of the problem. The DSA platform and the candidates it elevates go far beyond higher taxes or expanded welfare. They push abolishing ICE, open borders with amnesty, defunding and ultimately abolishing police and prisons, nationalizing major industry, gutting the Senate and the current structure of the presidency and judiciary, and treating private property as the enemy. That's not "democratic socialism." That's the same ideology that produced mass graves, famines, and police states across the 20th century. The fact that some of them wrap it in the language of democracy doesn't change the destination.
