In September he was convicted of "wilful promotion of hatred" for distributing gospel-oriented tracts that warned about the health and spiritual consequences of the homosexual lifestyle and invited people to turn to Jesus Christ.

The judge dismissed his Christian faith as the real motive and essentially called him a hateful attention-seeker.

He was ordered to surrender his passport within 24 hours ahead of a December sentencing hearing, so he drove to the U.S. border and began seeking political asylum.

When he returned to the border to claim belongings a friend tried to bring over, officers handcuffed and arrested him.

After days on a concrete floor with almost no food, medicine, or lawyer access, he was transferred to the Northwest ICE Processing Center in Tacoma, where he remains among hardened criminals while Canada seeks his extradition for speech that is protected in the United States.
