Carolyn Bourdeaux is a Democrat, a former congresswoman, and the head of the Concord Coalition. She believes both political parties have abandoned fiscal responsibility, Social Security is headed for a reckoning, and we're leaving the next generation one hell of a mess.
Having said that, what surprised me most wasn't the math. It was Carolyn's argument that getting our financial house in order isn't just an economic necessity. It's a patriotic obligation. And coming from a former Democratic congresswoman, that led us into some interesting territory.
Turns out, spending $2 trillion more than you make every year is a pretty lousy business model. And yet, that's precisely what our government is doing, with no apparent plan to stop. Carolyn has some thoughts on what happens when the bill comes due, and who's going to get stuck with it. Spoiler alert: That somebody is us. Or worse, our kids.
