A transgender suspect shot and killed nine people in a remote British Columbia town on Tuesday, injuring 25 others before taking his own life.
According to the Canadian authorities, the shooter killed his own mother and younger brother at their home in addition to seven people at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School.
The suspect, 18-year-old Jesse Strang, is being labeled a "gunperson" and a "female" by Canadian police and media outlets, but Strang was a biological male.
Police described the shooter as a "female in a dress with brown hair."
A YouTube account believed to belong to Strang displayed a transgender flag and used "she/her" pronouns, going by "Jess" instead of "Jesse."
Journalist Andy Ngo wrote on social media, "This is one of Canada's deadliest mass sh—tings and the suspect joins a fast growing list of trans mass killers in North America. The gunman's alleged YouTube avatar is a gun and anime character on top of a trans pride flag."
Ngo asked in a second post, "How long do you expect the Canadian media and public to refer to the Tumbler Ridge trans mass sh—ter as a 'woman'? Canada has had so few mass school sh—tings in its entire history that this will be hard for the media to memory hole and move away from."
Juno News confirmed with Strang's uncle, Russell G. Strang, that his transgender nephew was behind the attack.
