According to a CNN report, the warning came during separate phone conversations between Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and his counterparts in Cyprus and Bulgaria, according to statements released by Iran's foreign ministry.

During his call with Cypriot Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos, Araghchi urged Nicosia to ensure that foreign military bases on the island are not used for operations against Iran.

He stressed "the need to prevent any hostile forces from using foreign military bases located in Cyprus to carry out acts of aggression against Iran."

Araghchi also warned that any country permitting its territory to be used for military action against Iran would be regarded as complicit.

He said that if a state makes its soil available for the hostile use of another, then this "constitutes participation in an act of aggression."

According to the Iranian foreign ministry, Kombos responded by saying the Cypriot government had received assurances from the United Kingdom that British military bases on the island would not be used against any country, including Iran.

In a separate conversation with Bulgarian Foreign Minister Velislava Petrova-Chamova, Araghchi urged Sofia to reverse its decision to allow US military aircraft to use a Bulgarian air base in support of operations in West Asia.

"Iran expects the Bulgarian government to urgently reconsider its decision," CNN quoted Araghchi as saying.

He further warned that Iran "will not hesitate to defend its national interests and security against any aggression or hostile act, and that any party that participates in acts of aggression against Iran in any way will bear responsibility for the consequences."

The remarks follow a decision by Bulgaria's parliament earlier this month approving a government proposal to allow the US military to use an air base in the Balkan nation to support its operations in West Asia.

The latest diplomatic warnings come amid heightened tensions between Iran and the US.

Tehran has repeatedly accused countries hosting US military facilities of enabling American military operations and has previously warned several Gulf Arab states that allowing US forces to launch attacks from their territory could make them parties to the conflict.
