SpaceX CEO Elon Musk posted on Sunday that he plans to rename the company's AI unit to SpaceXSI, following US President Donald Trump's push to use the term "super intelligence" instead of "artificial intelligence."
The name change was confirmed by the CEO after he replied to a user on X who asked him about the possibility of renaming SpaceX AI to SpaceXSI. Beyond this, Musk has not provided any further information about the change.
The change comes after Trump said in a speech last month to the UN General Assembly that, "From this point forward, all of United States documents, and hopefully the world's, will be changed to use the much more accurate term 'super' as opposed to artificial. So it's super intelligence."
The lunch hosted by the White House a few days back saw Elon Musk sitting prominently right beside Trump, with Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang seated on the opposite side. The dinner came after Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei raised concerns about AI safety, after some of his researchers issued warnings and estimated a greater than 10% chance that AI could kill all humans within the next decade.
Amodei had urged leaders to "pace the frontier" in a letter, warning of AI-related risks including bioterrorism and cyberattacks. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman rejected Amodei's call for a slowdown. Trump, along with Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, has also dismissed the need for strict regulations and encouraged AI development to stay ahead of China, alongside the idea of renaming artificial intelligence as "super intelligence."
Earlier on Sunday, President Trump announced the formation of a "Super Intelligence Force" after meeting with leaders of some of the country's largest artificial intelligence companies last week, amid growing calls for guardrails around the technology.
According to Trump, the task force would coordinate with the federal government to "ensure that America continues to lead the world in Super Intelligence." The term is one that Trump has directed the federal government to use instead of artificial intelligence.
He further added that the task force will lead engagement with consumers, public interest groups, religious organisations, infrastructure providers and industry leaders, with Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton among those at the helm.
