A total of six states, including Washington, D.C., have either eliminated, greatly reduced, or are in the process of planning to make cuts to state-funded health coverage for immigrants due to budget pressures.
The changes are a reaction to the 2025 Budget Reconciliation legislation passed by Congress in 2025. The bill, which President Donald Trump christened the "One Big Beautiful Bill Act," made a number of large cuts in federal funding for healthcare for immigrants in the United States. States including Illinois, Minnesota, California, Colorado, North Carolina, and Washington state have now cut programs and reduced spending for healthcare coverage for these individuals over the last several years.
One example is the Golden State, which has made qualifying requirements more strict and cut out a large number of migrants who were previously eligible for the programs. They have also introduced premiums and later raised them when appropriate. Following that, California has also cut ancillary coverage such as dental care.
The state of Colorado is taking steps to reduce spending on coverage for pregnant immigrants and immigrant children. North Carolina has opted to overhaul its healthcare system in order to ensure it adheres strictly to the changes made by the Trump administration. These changes were made with the end goal of saving taxpayers money and ensuring that U.S. programs go toward providing help for citizens first.
According to a report from Breitbart News, federal law continues to maintain that individuals who enter the country illegally are ineligible to enroll in federally funded healthcare coverage, including programs such as Medicaid or CHIP, the ACA Marketplaces, and Medicare, much to the horror of big government liberals everywhere.
"As of 2024, there were 24 million noncitizen immigrants, including lawfully present and undocumented immigrants, living in the U.S. Noncitizen immigrants, particularly those who are undocumented, face significant barriers to accessing health coverage and care and are significantly more likely than citizens to be uninsured," KFF.org said.
